ASCAR GOES 'COAST TO COAST'
NATIONWIDE CHANNEL 4 TV DEAL
FOR OVAL RACING SERIES

Remember Tom Cruise in "Days of Thunder"? The same thrills will be seen for real on Channel 4, when the entire 2002 ASCAR racing series will be televised in a series of programmes, to be shown on Saturday mornings. The series, which features races on Britain's first banked oval racing circuit in a generation at Rockingham, near Corby in Northamptonshire, offers ultra close, 180mph action, with the added excitement of driving within a hairsbreadth of a solid concrete wall.

The races will be shown as part of Channel 4's Saturday morning coverage of British motorsport, which also includes Formula 3 and GT racing. ASCAR is a new form of motor sport in Europe featuring the thrills and spills of
American oval racing. All the cars have the same specification, with an American 500bhp V8 engine and a choice of three body styles. The only difference is the set-up of each car and the driver, which leads to very close racing and the lead continually changing.

2002 will also be the first season for ASCAR in Europe, with six meetings at Rockingham in the UK and six at Eurospeedway in Germany. The starting flag will wave on 9 May at Rockingham, with the first races being broadcast in the following weeks.

"The agreement is great news for everybody involved. It offers Channel 4 an exciting new form of motor racing and offers ASCAR competitors exceptional coverage for their sponsors and supporters" said Eve Hewitt, Marketing Director of Rockingham Motor Speedway. "ASCAR, which started from scratch last year, has already established itself as a key British motor sport series and looks set to become one of the most popular championships with racing enthusiasts and casual spectators alike."

Mini ‘Rock’ ready to roll !

Have you ever wanted to race a high
powered, fully prepared race car around a
Rockingham Track ?

From spring this year you can!..at the multi million pound racing circuit, Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, Northants If you have an Electric or nitro powered radio controlled touring car (or buggy/truck)
Rockingham Model Car Club will be racing Oval and road course on a specially prepared scale race track at each ASCAR round this year and plan to run weekly club events.

Toby Scheckter is the latest star driver to join the 170mph, 'Days
of Thunder' -style ASCAR oval racing series. The 22 year-old son
of the 1979 Formula One World Champion Jody Scheckter will drive
a 500 horsepower American V8 racing saloon prepared by last year's
Champions Torquespeed in the series, which races at Rockingham in
England and EuroSpeedway in Germany.

Scheckter, who was at one time tipped to follow his father into
Formula One, won the EFDA Euroseries Championship in 1999 with a
record eight wins and seven pole positions.  He was a front runner
in the Spanish Formula Nissan International Series, before switching
to saloon cars for the first time in the German V8 Star series last year.

Scheckter will gain his first experience of ASCAR at Rockingham
next week when, despite his experience, he undergoes 'rookie'
training.
This is mandatory for all new drivers, in order to for them to gain
experience of the additional demands posed by racing on the banked ovals
ASCAR reaffirmed its international reputation this week with a highly
successful series of initial tests at the EuroSpeedway track near

Dresden in Germany. The track's 'tri-oval' configuration with long
straights and three demanding corners saw a maximum speed reached
of 175mph, by the Ford Taurus of former World Hot Rod Champion John
Steward. The fastest overall lap of 51.8 seconds, set by reigning
ASCAR champion John Mickel, equates to an average of 139mph.

The test at EuroSpeedway also gave the French former Formula One
and ChampCar driver Nicolas Minassian his first experience of the
cars, joined by German stars Arnt Meier and Roland Rehfeld. Reigning
British Touring Car Champion Jason Plato was also in attendance

Rain, rain, rain and what, more rain ! ? Despite, you guessed it, the rain, Rockingham Model Car Club ran their second meeting on Sunday the 9th June at Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, Northants.

The day started dry but the weather forecasts lived up to their predictions as the heavens slowly opened and proceeded to rain virtually all day.
Despite this the race meeting went ahead - and what a good day it was. The drivers took their usual precautions by taping and sealing their electronics, as best they could, against the elements.

The classes were ran in Oval and Road formats, with the track easily changed between the two. Electric and Nitro Touring Cars on the Road course, and Electric and Nitro ASCAR on the Oval, along with some very special guests and the Nitro ASTRUCKS driven by Team Losi driver Gary Timms and other top Truck drivers. These guys could really get the trucks around the Oval. ( - imagine a hippo travelling around in circles, at over 30mph on three legs ! !)

The format was four round and final. First up were the ASTRUCK monsters, Gary Timms took the TQ with a blistering 30 lap run using his Losi Truck. ASCAR was dominated by Richard Johnson with his mind boggling RC Lab achieving 34 laps in the wet!, and finally TOURING CAR with Daniel Wooster grabbing 22 laps with again an RC Lab car.

We are lucky that the R/C racing at the 'Rock' is ran alongside the full size Ascar race meeting. This gives the competitors the opportunity to see full size motor racing at its best in the UK's most up to date and only speedway oval (well that's if they can find the time in their hectic race schedule !?

Because of the persistent rain, the full size Ascars did not race at all. This gave us the chance to invite racing driver of Ascar Team Deuce #84 Toby Scheckter (son of ex Ferrari F1 world champion Jody Scheckter) to have a race with us. Toby has an Associated TC3 that he drives in his spare time. Craig Butterworth gladly gave Toby loan of his Schumacher Mission complete with Ascar body painted exactly as Toby full size #84 Ascar. Toby quickly got his Mission up to speed and was putting in some very good laps and gave us all a good run for our money, unfortunately after a couple of high speed spills his race came to an end with a broken car (whoops sorry Craig!)

In the last round a few drivers suffered the dreaded car grinding to a halt with water logged speedos. The drivers were asked if they wished to continue to the finals and with an overall majority, we continued on.
The tyre choice thorough the day varied , but most drivers elected to use Slicks of various makes due to the race track draining very quickly after each rain shower. The very close racing in the finals entertained the always present crowds of spectators, who often commented "This racing is better then the full size cars"

2001 Ascar Champion - John Mickel was happy to present our trophies to the wet but happy winners.
All in all, a wet but very good days racing that was made even better by the raffle prizes donated by our sponsors Helger Racing - Team Losi, Trinity, LRP, CML - Team Associated, Reedy, Novak, Protoform and M~Troniks

Thanks to every one who came, persisted and raced in the wet.
Don't forget to book in early for the next meeting on 25th August, which also includes the final round of the BRCA/RRCI/Ascar RC Racing National series championships.
(If you have a HPI car you can enter Round 8 of the HPI Challenge on 4th Aug. 2002 )
